The Kettering College of Medical Arts, Kettering Network, Kettering and Centerville SDA Churches and Spring Valley Academy collaborated on a high school basketball tournament and youth rally November 18-20. The 2010 Basketball Tournament teams that participated included: Battle Creek Academy (Michigan); Landmark Christian (Cincinnati); Mount Vernon Academy (Mount Vernon, OH); Valley Grande Academy (Weslaco, Texas); Junior Lady Knights (Greater Dayton, OH) and Spring Valley Academy (SVA). A Youth Rally was also held in conjunction with the basketball tournament incorporating the theme "MORE THAN A GAME." Austin Gutwein, a junior high school student from Arizona was the featured speaker at an assembly Friday morning. He is the founder of Hoops of Hope, a charity that has raised over $1 million dollars for orphans in Africa affected by the HIV/AIDS crisis. Students were challenged to get sponsors for a free-throw challenge with 100% of the proceeds given to Hoops of Hope, who are raising money for an orphanage in Zambia. A total of more than $15,000 was raised, however, of that total amount; $12,300 was raised by SVA freshman student, Lindsey Haffner who received special acknowledgement from Austin. Awesome job, Lindsey! Others that received special recognition included Alec Velasco, Grade 8, and Andrea Hoover, SVA senior, who shot 10 consecutive free throws for an additional bonus of $100. Andrea went on and met the challenge of an impromptu donor that gave $500 for Andrea hitting 25 more consecutive free throws! The Battle Creek Academy was also recognized for their overall support and bringing the best attitude to the line in the Hoops of Hope fundraising part of the tournament. (Thanks, Battle Creek for your cheerful spirit!) In closing, Austin signed and gave out copies of his book, Take Your Best Shot - Do Something Bigger Than Yourself to every student present challenging readers that no matter what your skills are, no matter what your age, you can make a difference! On Sabbath, those teams attending the Youth Rally at the Kettering SDA Church received $500 to go out and invest this seed money to make a difference and be "the salt of the earth" which was part of Pastor Karl Haffner's sermon challenge that morning. Many team members expressed their excitment to Pastor Karl in what they could do to help others with this money. NOTE: This meant those schools participating in the tournament basically got their entrance fee back if they accepted the challenge to use the money to make a difference which truly made this tournament "MORE THAN A GAME." The Championship Games commenced Saturday night resulting with a SVA Lady Stallions victory over The Junior Lady Knights (52-35) for the Girls' Championship while Landmark Christian beat our SVA Boys (44-41) for the Boys' Championship game. Special thanks goes to Kettering College of Medical Arts (KCMA), the Kettering Network, and the Planning Committee for making this tournament possible. SVA also appreciates the support of all Pastors, teams, coaches, parents and fans who made this event the success it was!
